About the inventor - Michael Weir

  Background
It is while I was studying towards my Chemistry BSc that I registered my first patent, the ‘Self-watering Plant Pot’.  My housemates and I kept an yucca in our front room, which withered on countless occasions due to our lethargic watering habits.  It was only during an environmental chemistry lecture that I realised how condensed atmospheric water vapour could save our little friend.  Thus, in designing a plant pot with an inbuilt dehumidifier power by solar cells, I had stumbled into the realms of being an inventor.

Inventive Vision
I am motivated by the desire to create an elegant solution for a particular issue or problem. Rather than over-engineer, I aim to fashion simplistic and functional design solutions, ones that lend themselves to autonomy and work in a symbiosis with the natural world. I encourage everyone to quickly scribble down notes if they have an inspiration for an idea, before it is forgotten and the opportunity to add it to scientific progress has passed.

Commercialisation
The next stage for the majority of my patents is to secure a backer who would commission working prototypes and enable the development of the basic designs.  Fingers crossed...
